Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting Screen Enclosures

Your screen enclosure is an invaluable addition to your home, providing comfort, protection, and privacy for your outdoor spaces. Whether it enhances your patio, protects your pool area, or creates a bug-free environment, a well-maintained screen enclosure significantly enhances the enjoyment and functionality of your home. However, like any part of your house, screen enclosures require regular care and attention to stay in optimal condition.

Proper maintenance helps ensure your screen enclosure lasts for many years, protecting both the frame and the screen mesh. With a few simple steps, you can keep it looking great and functioning properly, preventing costly repairs and premature replacement.

Maintenance Tips for Your Screen Enclosure

1. Regular Cleaning is Key

One of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain your screen enclosure is through regular cleaning. Dirt, leaves, and debris can accumulate on both the screens and frame, potentially leading to corrosion, mold, or clogged drainage channels.

  • Screens: Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove debris from the screens. If you notice heavy buildup, wash the screens with a mild detergent and water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.
  • Frame: To remove dirt and grime from the aluminum frame of your screen enclosure, use a damp cloth or sponge. For more stubborn stains, use a gentle cleaner to avoid damaging the finish.

2. Inspect Screens for Damage

Routine inspections are vital to detect any tears or damage early on. The screen material is designed to be durable, but over time, it can succumb to wear and tear due to weather, UV exposure, or physical damage.

  • Check for tears or holes: A small tear in the mesh can easily be repaired with a screen patch, but larger damage may require replacing the entire screen panel.
  • Check for sagging: If you notice any screens sagging or pulling away from the frame, it’s essential to re-tighten them to maintain the enclosure’s structural integrity.

3. Maintain the Frame and Hardware

Environmental factors like moisture and saltwater (especially in coastal areas) can affect the frame of your screen enclosure and cause corrosion over time. Regular maintenance and proper care will ensure the frame remains strong and durable.

  • Lubricate moving parts: If your screen enclosure has sliding or moving parts, such as doors or windows, make sure to lubricate them with a silicone-based lubricant. This helps prevent rust and ensures smooth operation.
  • Check for rust: Rust can compromise the strength of your enclosure, particularly around the frame and hardware. Inspect regularly for signs of rust, and treat it with a rust remover to avoid further damage.

4. Inspect for Proper Drainage

Screen enclosures often have drainage systems built into the design to prevent water from pooling inside the structure. These drainage channels should be regularly checked to ensure they are free of clogs and debris.

  • Clean gutters and drains: Remove any leaves, dirt, or other debris that may block water flow. A blocked drain can lead to water accumulation, which can eventually damage the screen or the frame.
  • Check for pooling: If you notice water pooling in any areas of the enclosure, it may indicate a drainage issue that requires fixing. Proper drainage helps prevent long-term damage to the screen and frame.

5. Regular Professional Inspection

While regular DIY maintenance is important, periodic inspections and upkeep by professionals are equally essential. A professional technician can identify potential issues you might have missed, such as structural damage or signs of wear on the frame, that could lead to larger problems if not addressed.

  • Annual inspections: Schedule an annual inspection with a professional to ensure that all components of your screen enclosure are functioning properly and that no repairs are needed.

Pool Safety Tips: Fabri-tech Life Saver Pool Fence

An unprotected pool is over one hundred times more dangerous to a child than a

loaded gun (Freakanomics, 2005). Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children under

five in several states, out-ranking car accidents and disease. The safety of your family

leaves no room for compromise. Trust Fabri-tech Screens with pool safety fencing and

installation.

1. Never leave a child unattended in or near water.

Always watch children when they’re in or near water and never leave them unattended.

Designate an official Water Watcher, an adult tasked with supervising children in the

water. Watching should be their only task – they shouldn’t be reading, texting or playing

games on a phone. Have a phone close by at all times in case you need to call for help,

and if a child is missing, check the pool first.

Even if a lifeguard is present, parents and caregivers should take the responsibility of

being a designated Water Watcher. When any lifeguard chair is empty, the remaining

lifeguards may not be able to see the entire pool and when lifeguards are seated in low

chairs, their view can be blocked by patrons in the pool.

2. Teach children how to swim.

Swimming is not only fun, it’s a lifesaving skill. Enroll children in swimming lessons;

there are many free or reduced-cost options available from the local YMCA, USA

Swimming chapter or Parks and Recreation Department.

3. Teach children to stay away from drains.

Do not play or swim near drains or suction outlets, especially in spas and shallow

pools. Never enter a pool or spa that has a loose, broken or missing drain cover.

Children’s hair, limbs, jewelry or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain or suction

opening. When using a spa, be sure to locate the emergency vacuum shutoff before

entering the water.

4. Install a Fence or Barriers

Fences or barriers protect children and pets from danger while playing around a pool.

Safety fencing offers adults convenient pool access and secures the pool area with a

lockable gate. Fences prevent children from entering the pool area without an

accompanying guardian.

Aluminum Fabrication

Aluminum Fabrication is the process of creating metal parts, structure and products by

means of cutting, bending and shaping the material.

Advantages of Aluminum in Fabrication

  • High strength-to-weight ratio

  • Malleable

  • Non-combustive

  • Non-toxic

  • Recyclable

  • Reflective

  • Resistant to corrosion

  • Soft and light

  • Thermal conductivity

Types of Aluminum Fabrication

Fabrication of aluminum spans a variety of processes, including bending, extruding, shearing,

stamping and welding.

  • Adhesive Bonding: Common method of assembling aluminum.

  • Casting: Pouring liquid aluminum into a mold or die.

  • Deburring: Method of removing small-cap or extrusion burrs using a mechanical

    brush or a grinding machine.

  • Drawing: Pulls metal through a tapered die to stretch it.

  • Drilling: Should be carried out at higher speeds, especially with softer alloys. The hole

will be slightly larger than the diameter of the bit.

  • Extrusions: Force aluminum through or around a die to conform it to the size and

    shape of the die.

  • Forging: Beating or compressing aluminum into shape.

  • Forming: Includes bending, stamping, and rolling.

  • Hydroforming: Used to shape aluminum three-dimensionally in a single process. The

single part can be created with excellent dimensional accuracy.

  • Milling: Utilizing milling machines with large teeth pitches.

  • Plastic Forming (bending/stretching): Plastic forming includes several processes:

    • Draw bending: Most popular method

    • Press bending: Mainly used for bending of large series

    • Roller bending: Used for creating large radii in the workpiece

    • Stretch bending: Offers high three-dimensional shape accuracy

  • Sawing: Sawing aluminum is faster than sawing steel since higher sawing speeds can

    be achieved.

  • Shearing: Shearing is accomplished through eccentric presses using a cutting tool.

Punching and dying a hardened tool is recommended.

  • Tapping: Internal and external threads made through plastic deformation.
